Iblink at Alex, trying to figure out what he actually just said. It sounded like he just said I need you, three little words that made my whole body flush with heat. But there’s no way I heard him right.

“Sorry, what?” I say.

“I need you to leave,” he says, his voice strained. “That’s what I meant to say.”

And yet his expression is telling me the exact opposite. His eyes are full of hunger. And the way he’s leaning into me right now feels more desire-filled than anything else. He wants to kiss me. Maybe I’m being delusional and I’m imagining all of this…no. I’m not. He wants me. The look in his eyes is undeniable.

“But the fireworks aren’t over,” I say.

I can hear the breath he draws in and exhales.

“You can watch them from somewhere else,” he says.

How do I tell him that I want him, too?

“You really want me to leave?” I ask.

“I need you to leave,” he says.

“Tell me you want me to leave.”

“I can’t.”

He moves even closer to me. I turn my back toward the window and lean against the thick pane of glass. When Alex places his hands on either side of me, trapping me in place, my heart rate shoots up. Can anyone see us right now? Should we go somewhere more private?

“We can’t do this, Waverly.”

“Do what?” I ask innocently.

“You’re really going to make me say it?”

I smile, my heart still pounding like crazy. “Just making sure we’re on the same page.”

“And what page do you think I’m on?”

“I think you want to kiss me, Alex.”

He laughs a little under his breath. “I want to do more than kiss you.”

Heat sears through me. “Oh?”

But he just groans with frustration. “Leave, Waverly. Leave before we do something we both regret.”

Is he right? Is this a horrible idea? If one of my friends told me that she wanted to sleep with her boss, I would tell her she was out of her mind. And yet this doesn’t feel like a mistake. It doesn’t even feel like Alex is my boss right now. We’re just two people who want each other. What’s so wrong about that?

That’s the last thought I have before I throw all caution to the wind and lean in and press my lips to Alex’s. The second our mouths meet, Alex sighs a groan and kisses me back. And then his body is pushed up against mine, all of his gloriously hard muscles meeting my curves. As starkly different as our bodies are, we somehow fit together perfectly.

I feel a little lightheaded as our kiss deepens, disbelief and pleasure surging through me in equal measure. Damn, the man is a good kisser. I may have been the one to kiss him first, but he’s the one in full control now, showing me just how good a kiss can be. With a happy moan, I arch against him, wanting as much of him as I can have.

And when he pushes back against me, I can feel just how hard and thick he is.
